Free Time

So today was my one day off for the week and I ended up spending it all off base downtown with some of my Airmen. Wasn't supposed to be an all-day thing, but it did. Went to one of the malls and did some window shopping and had some lunch. Even though they have all the American standbys here like Burger King, Subway, and McDonald's, their food courts still have some local stuff and I ended up getting a lamb kebab with some hummus. The hummus here is friggin' amazing. It's nothing like that grainy paste they sell back in the states. This stuff they have here is quite possibly the greatest condiment known to man.

After the mall, we went to the souqs, which are like flea markets. Most of the shops are grouped together by what they sell. There's the animal area where we saw rabbits and baby chickens dyed different colors, there's the candy and spices area, there's the scarf and headdress area, then there's the cafe area.

Driving around off base is intense. They don't have any sort of driver's license program here, so anyone with a vehicle can drive. Needless to say, it has one of the worst vehicle accident rate of any country in the world. Most of the busiest intersections are also round-a-bouts, which is just an accident waiting to happen. Coming back on base is a bit of an ordeal as well, but that's fine with me. It takes about 30 minutes due to the vehicle inspections and everything making sure nothing makes it on base that isn't supposed to. It's always nice to get off base and away from work to just relax and forget about stuff for a while. It's been a rough couple of weeks with everything going on here, and just before I left this morning I was told that we have to do an engine change on one of our jets here. Now, picture that for a second...changing an engine while flying our regular schedule in 100+ degree heat and blowing dust...Just another log on the fire. I decided I wasn't going to worry about until tomorrow, because you know what? Its my day off, and today, I just don't care.
It's going to be a rough Monday, though.
